NUS Law Student , Brandon Tee
NUS law student Brandon Tee is now out on $1,500 bail.
A SINGAPOREAN law student has been charged in Hong Kong with assaulting his girlfriend.
Brandon Tee Zhi Yi, 24, from the National University of Singapore, met Ms Ju Benhua while on a year-long student exchange at Hong Kong University.
He has been charged with one count of assault causing bodily hurt to Ms Ju after allegedly attacking her in his apartment in the Central district, Chinese media in Hong Kong reported.
According to Tee's mother, with whom The Straits Times spoke yesterday, the incident happened on July 8, after which Ms Ju filed charges. 'They were fighting and yes, he hit her, but it was a spur-of-the-moment thing and out of anger,' she said, asking to be named only as Mrs Tee. 'We're hoping to settle this out of court.'
Mrs Tee, who works in logistics, added that she and her husband had flown to Hong Kong to be with their son because of the court hearing, which has been adjourned until Aug 10.
The Straits Times understands the adjournment was made as Ms Ju has been in contact with Tee and is reluctant to take the witness stand.

Loanshark runner jailed 7-years for harassments
By Elena Chong
A MAN who set fire and scribbled graffiti on the walls of various HDB units on behalf of a loanshark was jailed for seven years and ordered to be given 24 strokes of the cane on Tuesday.
Project manager Soh Hann Kwang, 36, who had pleaded guilty to 13 of 33 charges, was also banned from driving for a year.
For two weeks in June 2011, he drove his wife's off-peak car to various locations. such as Jurong, Ang Mo Kio, Sengkang and Toa Payoh, to commit the offences. He had no driving licence and had thus driven without insurance coverage.
A district court heard that Soh was saddled with debts after borrowing from both legal and illegal moneylenders.
One of them offered him a job as a runner in early June. He was paid $150 for setting fire at each unit, $70 for splashing paint and scribbling on the wall of each unit and $10 extra if a padlock was used.
He was arrested on June 14 during an islandwide operation against an unlicensed moneylending syndicate.

Maid fined and jailed for loansharking offences
By Elena Chong
A FILIPINO domestic worker who helped her Singaporean employer operate an illegal moneylending business was jailed for three months and fined $130,000 on Tuesday.
Melanie Jacalan Munar's jail sentence was backdated to her remand on Jan 13, which means she has served her sentence.
As she cannot afford to pay the fines, the widow of a nine-year-old boy will serve a default sentence of three weeks and six days. The 28-year-old, who had been working for Koh Suat Lay, 47, since 2004, pleaded guilty to five charges of helping Koh in the loanshark business by issuing loans of $300 to $500 to Filipino maids between 2009 and May 2010.
The borrowers were charged interest rates of 10 to 50 per cent repayable over one to three months.
Koh has been charged and her case is fixed for another pre-trial conference next week. Munar could have been fined up to $300,000 and jailed for up to four years on each of the three 2010 offences.
For each of two offences committed in 2009, she could have been fined up to $200,000 or jailed for up to two years or to both on each charge.
